The first seven notes are iconic, instantly recognisable by anyone, rock music fan or not. The reason why 'Seven Nation Army' has become such a signature stadium song is, in part, due to the catchiness and legacy status of the song itself. Why is 'Seven Nation Army' a football chant? Goal takes a look at how the White Stripes song has been permanently embedded within football culture. The song has developed a legacy as a popular, shared stadium anthem over the years, not tied to a particular set of fans. “Really, you can market something or you can brand something or you can push it or you can try to support it and build it into something bigger, but you really have no idea what’s going to connect with other people. If you're at a stadium or watching the game from the television, it's pretty common to hear the White Stripes' classic 'Seven Nation Army' sung by supporters far and wide. “Just goes to show you, even when you’ve got it right in front of your face sometimes, you still don’t know,” he added. There was a lesson for White in all of this. It becomes something that, the more people don’t know where it came from, the happier I am.” It becomes folk music when things like that happen. “Nothing is more beautiful in music than when people embrace a melody and allow it to enter the pantheon of folk music,” White told O'Brien. Meanwhile, the accompanying music video, with its hypnotizing kaleidoscopic visuals, was put into heavy rotation on MTV. The cultural impact struck even deeper: The riff of “Seven Nation Army” has become a rallying cry at sporting events across the globe and remains ubiquitous decades later. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative chart and later earned a Grammy for Best Rock Song. 17, 2003, “Seven Nation Army” received widespread acclaim. Still, White championed the song, and it was ultimately issued as the first single from Elephant. “The labels didn’t want to release it as a single when we were coming out with the album,” White later said in an interview with Conan O'Brien. Watch Jack White Perform 'Seven Nation Army' at Glastonbury “Seven Nation Army” doesn’t contain a chorus, instead relying on a key-changed version of its riff for the refrain. Part of the reason could have been the song’s structure, which isn't built with a traditional verse-chorus-verse framework. “Seven Nation Army” was “not considered anything interesting” by those in the White Stripes camp during sessions for 2003’s Elephant. The results didn't garner much little attention at first. The third verse could be something from a hundred years ago.” To me, the song was a blues at the beginning of the twenty-first century. But I never set out to write an expose on myself. In the end,” White added, “it started to become a metaphor for things I was going through. It came from the frustration of watching my friends do this to each other. It was about gossip, the spreading of lies and the other person’s reaction to it. Jack White told Rolling Stone that “Seven Nation Army” was initially “about two specific people I knew in Detroit. “It’s about me, Meg and the people we’re dating.” “The song’s about gossip,” Jack later told The Independent. Eventually, the song developed an identity, built around themes of betrayal, celebrity and resentment – all things the White Stripes were experiencing during their rise in fame. The title was not supposed to stick but was simply intended as a placeholder until he crafted some lyrics. White called the tune “Seven Nation Army,” after his mispronunciation of the Salvation Army as a kid. Who is Charlotte Flair now? How has your character evolved?įlair: The People’s Queen. All of those things weigh on me on a professional level, but it’s good things. I still want to have that “greatest performance of all time” moment. I still want to grow, learn, and get better. But personally, I feel like I still have so much further to go. So here I am, an active performer with the title, “legend.” What are some of those expectations that you have for yourself going into this the seventh time around?įlair: Well, for instance, I have an A&E biography coming out next week and it’s the for Legends series–which I didn’t know it was for at the time. I love proving people wrong so I love the pressure. But with my own personal pressure, my own goals, and my own expectations for myself and my performance–I feel like the weight of the world is on my back right now. With experience, I know what it’s like to be out there. I’ve always either been a contender, or a champion and here I am going into my seventh with the performances and the rivalries I’ve already had. You’re having to rise to the occasion that many times and on the grandest stage. I think pressure and expectation–all of it kind of adds up. NBC Sports: This is going to be your seventh WrestleMania, what does this WrestleMania mean to you?Ĭharlotte Flair: I want to say it gets easier with experience, but it doesn’t. *This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Like all good stories, this one incorporates a lesson just subtle enough that readers will forget they're being taught, but in the end will understand themselves, and others, a little better, regardless of la lengua nativa-the mother tongue. This story seamlessly weaves two culturaswhile letting each remain intact, just as Miguel is learning to do with his own life. Eventually, Tía Lola and the children swap English and Spanish ejercicios, but the true lesson is "mutual understanding." Peppered with Spanish words and phrases, Alvarez makes the reader as much a part of the "language" lessons as the characters. She can also cook exotic food, dance (anywhere, anytime), plan fun parties, and tell enchanting stories. Tía Lola, however, knows a language that defies words she quickly charms and befriends all the neighbors. The last thing Miguel wants, as he's trying to fit into a predominantly white community, is a flamboyant aunt who doesn't speak a word of English. When Tía Lola arrives to help the family, Miguel and his hermana, Juanita, have just moved from New York City to Vermont with their recently divorced mother. Renowned Latin American writer Alvarez has created another story about cultural identity, but this time the primary character is 11-year-old Miguel Guzmán. Howell’s artwork is arresting, with an emotional lucidity that conveys powerful people, facing adversity without losing their way. Salted between poems are pieces through which Old Man fills the gaps, sketches in the memories, locates what abides: spirit, humility, grace, generosity. The poems can be incantatory some are simple explication (“What came with us in the Beginning Time?/Turtle Spirit./What comforted us in the Middle Way?/Buffalo Spirit”), while others are more elusive (“We are afraid to remember obsidian,/because it reminds us of pain”). While the Sacred Flame is central to the book, Wood ranges far and wide, into Sun Dances and corn ceremonies, community and tradition. The story is told by the Old Man, guardian of the Sacred Fire, one of the four great elements and symbolic of longevity, hope, wisdom, and purification. The hardship suffered by the Pueblos after the Spanish occupation brings a concurrent sense of survivance, and of holding tight to the cosmology, rituals, and pacing of their everyday lives. In another collaboration with Howell, Wood (Dancing Moons, 1995, etc.) uses poetry and prose to tell of the Pueblo people of the Southwest, a story at once melancholy and wonderfully dense with cultural landscapes. While still red and attached to the tree, the worm’s body and shell are scraped off and used to make what is called “Royal Red Dye.” The waxy material is used to make high-quality shellac, used in the Middle East as a wood preserver. In biblical times, the red dye excreted from the Crimson Worm was used in the High Priest’s robe and probably for red dye used on ram’s skins to create the covering of the Tabernacle in the wilderness (Ex 26:1, 28:5). Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. It then begins to flake off and drop to the ground looking like snow. On day four, the tail of the mother worm pulls up into her head, forming a heart-shaped body that is no longer crimson but has turned into a snow-white wax that looks like a patch of wool on the tree or fence. Thereby, they are identified as crimson worms. The baby worms remain crimson-colored for their entire lives. After three days, the mother worm dies, and her body excretes a crimson or scarlet dye that stains the wood to which she is attached and her baby worms. When the larvae hatch, they remain under the mother’s protective shell so the baby worms can feed on the living body of the mother worm for three days. The female worm lays her eggs under her body, under the protective shell. It is a shell so hard and so secured to the wood that it can only be removed by tearing apart the body, which would kill the worm. With her body attached to the wooden tree, a hard crimson shell forms. When the female crimson worm is ready to lay her eggs, which happens only once in her life, she climbs up a tree or fence and attaches herself to it. And it points to the work of Jesus on the cross. In the lifecycle of this worm is where the remez is found. The Crimson Worm (scientific name: coccus ilicis or kermes ilicis) looks more like a grub than a worm. And in this crimson worm, we find a hidden meaning of biblical significance. It should be noted that the colors crimson and scarlet are very deep, blackish-red, which is the color of blood. So the word “tola’ath” or “towla” in Psalm 22:6 denotes not only a worm but also identifies it as a crimson or scarlet worm common to the Middle East and predominantly in Israel. Strong’s Dictionary defines this word as “a maggot (as voracious) the crimson-grub but used only (in this connection) of the color from it, and cloths dyed therewith:– crimson, scarlet, worm.” The Hebrew word “towla” or “”tola’ath”is used 43 times in the Old Testament - mostly as a color but sometimes in reference to man (eg. Psa 22:6 But I am a worm, and no man a reproach of men, and despised of the people. However, in Psalm 22:6, the word for “worm” is “towla”’ or “tola’ath”. The common Hebrew word for “worm” is “rimmah,” and it is defined as a maggot or a worm. So what did the psalmist mean when he wrote, “But I am a worm?” The Worm in Psalm 22:6 And in verse six, it says, “But I am a worm, and no man…” Jesus was certainly a man on the cross. This psalm is prophetic of the cross of Jesus. There’s an interesting remez in Psalm 22:6. (See the list below of many remezes in the Bible.) It’s said to be a “treasure” that is found below the surface of, or behind, the words. In Jewish hermeneutics (interpretation of Scripture), a remez is a hidden message or a deeper meaning. And they could have remembered the promise of hope in this psalm’s closing words. Had they remembered David’s words, they could have seen and understood what was happening before their eyes. And for those standing at the foot of the cross, His words should have evoked the words of this psalm in their minds. On the cross, Jesus quoted Psalm 22 when He cried out, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Mat 27:46, Mark 15:34 Read: Was Jesus Forsaken by His Father?). In great detail, this psalm describes the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus that would take place 1,000 years after the psalm was penned by David. This psalm is also prophetic because it gives a “picture” of the cross from the perspective of our Good Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ. Psalm 22 is known as one of the three Shepherd Psalms (Read: Following the Good, Great, and Chief Shepherd, Psalms 22, 23, and 24). It’s starts with the the sound of moving water water. The process of recognizing an approaching tsunami in my dream is always the same. I’ve even had dreams of tsunamis finding me as I’m looking out a nearby window at work. I’ve had dreams of trekking through a jungle and then a tsunami comes out of no where. I’ve had dreams of being at my grandparents house in a small country town walking down the block and again see gigantic waves rolling through the surrounding corn fields uprooting everything in their course and have the wave fold over right in front of me. I’ve had dreams of staying at fancy hotels and sitting on a balcony with friends only to look out onto the city skyline and see a massive wave towering the buildings and hear the water forcing it’s way towards us crushing everything in it’s path. I don’t have to be near any body of water in my dreams to look up and find a mounds of water rushing towards me. They don’t scare me, these dreams of tsunami, but they follow me everywhere in my sleep. There have been times when a tsunami visited my dreams up to five days in a given week. Over the past couple of months, and especially these last few weeks, the frequency of my tsunami dreams has been like never before. I grew tired of pondering their meaning and continued to accept them as they came. I continued to ask myself about these dreams each morning when I awoke from them, but these periods of questioning were always brief. And I can recall having tsunami dreams before 2011 so I ruled that option out. Being on the northern most island, he was not affected. Maybe these dreams of tsunamis are a warning sign for me to stay away from the sea because of me potentially getting caught in a tsunami… I thought another possibility for these dreams had something to do with my brother being in Japan in 2011 when a major tsunami struck during his exchange year. I love feeling the misty breeze on my face and wiggling the sand between my toes. I love looking out onto the endless sea imagining that there’s someone on the other side of that big body of water that is doing the same. Costal cities are some of my favorite places to visit. I thought to myself that maybe it has to do with me actually experiencing a tsunami sometime in the future. Little have I thought deeply of what they mean. I’ve grown rather immune to these heart-racing dreams. During these months tsunamis appear in my dreams anywhere from a couple of times a month to multiple times in a week. I have had frequent dreams of tsunamis/tidal waves for the past couple of years. They make their way in my dreams every few months. de Klerk became president of South Africa in 1989, he released Mandela and many other people who opposed Apartheid, and began dismantling the Apartheid system.
